We all know that living in the past really isn´t good for us. But why? And what about living in the future? We need balance. Living in the moment, in the here and now, is something we must focus on if we are to lead happy lives. Living in the moment has been shown to be the best way to become and stay happy. We Can’t Change the Past

Almost every one of us has regrets about something in our past. There is nothing we can do to change it though. All the “should have, could have, would have” don´t lead us anywhere.

So, instead of wasting our time and energy in lamenting over situations that are long gone and no longer in our control to change, we can use the energy to make our present situation better. Learn what you can from the past, and then move on. This is where the past is important, to learn from it.

We Can’t Predict What the Future Holds

Don’t worry about the future, because you cannot predict what it will bring. You can only prepare to a certain extent. And worrying about what tomorrow holds will only cause stress that will contribute to health and mental problems.

At the same time, it is important to dream about the future. But to make your dreams come true, you have to be in the present. Otherwise, it will stay a dream forever.

Therefore, live in the moment and choose to make the present your focus. Instead of worrying about what repercussions your choices might bring to your future, make decisions based on what is good in your life right now at this moment. This will reduce tendencies towards depression, anxiety and stress.

It Forces You to Be Present

When we think more about the past or the future than the present, we drift away from what is right in front of our eyes. Maybe your present involves a work project that demands your full attention and energy. Or your present involves small kids that need your presence, love and care to develop. One day you might “wake up” and wonder where all the precious time has gone. Including the good and bad that have just passed you by because you were not present.

When you embrace your present fully, you will get more out of the life you have. You will be able to stop not noticing your present joy over the fear about what may come next, or over the guilt of decisions that are in the past.

Be grateful for the people around you now, and for the opportunities that are knocking on your door at this very moment. You will learn to cherish the moments that will enhance your future with good, happy memories. And you will have no regrets over having missed out on life because of misplaced focus.

Having a Balanced Outlook

Living in the present is important. Having a balanced focus is important too. When you think about the future, make plans. Plans that are necessary for you to enjoy the time in the future, because someday it will be your “in the moment.” But it only will be if you don’t neglect planning for the future. Just don’t let the planning consume your life now in an unhealthy way. Balance is key, as I said before. And it will help you not to feel stressed due to too much focus on one area of your life.

Living in the moment really makes you happier. It is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You will achieve happiness when you choose to live and enjoy where you are right now, instead of pining away for another time and place. Through utilizing the time and the life you are given right here and now, you will learn to know true happiness.

I know this as I am guilty of letting precious time slip away with our son. Constantly feeling guilty of not having time to spend with him because of building a business that paid the bills, but I didn´t enjoy because of not having time to spend with him, I missed out on time that we actually had together… Don´t make the same mistake! Enjoy your here and now, no matter what.
